On June 17, 2007, the 10th anniversary of the UltraBike took
place and since it's kind of my hometown race, I definitely
had to start. All morning long, I kept hearing that there
were a record number of participants, which I quickly found
out for myself, because there were about 1000 bikers signed
up just for the 26.7m/43km track.
DThis year, however, the location of the start was chosen
so intelligently that you had to stand in line for 15min just
to get into the licensed block last.
Oh well, this just meant that I had to make my way to the
front quickly right from the start, which wasn't very easy
on the flat terrain. After a while I made it to the lead group
during the first ascent, but it was already starting to disband
at that point.
Well, everything went well til the second incline and I had
a good rhythm going, when I had to get off my bike to grab
a water bottle, since the person handing me the bottle was
still inexperienced and not capable of handing me the bottle
in passing ;-) .....
So, the rhythm was gone and I rode up the third inline with
my hand on the brake, because otherwise I would have gotten
cramps again. Therefore, the last 6.2m/10km downhill weren't
exactly relaxing and the muddy track didn't make it any easier.
I finished 25th overall and 7th in my age division, which
was pretty okay considering my bad luck.
