near the end of my four-week, Canary Island marathon-training-program,
I found myself at the starting line of the short distance,
at the Open MTB Marathon Gran Canaria, on March 8th. I dealt
with the fast, gravelly creek-bed-carnage much better than
the steep ascents on La Palma, last weekend. It was my "push-race."
I came in 8th in the overall ranking and another win was due
in my age division.....
This time, the long distance was no picnic for my Training-Princess
Kerstin Brachtendorf, of team Fiat-Rotwild, which made her
1st place finish even sweeter:
"It was harder than I thought it would be. I underestimated
the track. But in hindsight, the steep passages came to my
advantage, since that's where I left my competition in the
dust. I was finally able to put some distance between Jenn
O'Connor and myself, on the long, steep section we had to
traverse. I was worried she'd catch up to me on the last few
miles through the creek bed, against the wind, and pedaled
like there was no tomorrow, because every inch counts..."
Til the ROCKY MOUNTAIN BIKE Marathon in Riva del Garda on
May 3rd, training's gonna be even tougher, more or less, or
more...
I'll be there! --
