December 2008

Bit late now that it's mid of winter:
Last fall's (half)marathon in Darmstadt. Being very much acquainted with the forest and fields behind my back door, I felt right at home with the first open edition of the Darmstadt marathon. Unfortunately this will be the only time for the race to be held on this wonderful trail before it will change to a much more urban setting.

Hey Pirates,
I represented Pirate Racing quite well yesterday at the Florida State 5K & 10K time trial championships. The event was telecast live on the internet with a rather large audience based on the feedback I have gotten.
I won gold in both events and gave Pirate some good publicity.

News from Sandy Scott:
I had a very successful spring season winning both the United States Cycling Federation Florida state time trial and road race championships in June.
I won the latter by doing a single breakaway from the breakaway pack with 4 miles to go.
An incredibly painful experience!

But you know how parents are, they quickly talked me back into it.

Hello Pirates,

In the frame of the German Football leauge contrackt in Münsingen, I rode my first race of the season. With Slummy conditions it was hard to keep riding. After a whole group in front of me fell down, i fell behind to the end and had to be happy with 12th place.

Mornin' everybody, Finally the seventh stage is in the bag. Today it was "only" 91km abd 2000 hm, thats just twice as much as the little p-weg round. Besides the daily sandbox we had a super singletrail with 15km of the best track. It was bikeing for the soul.

Hey People, Today the "BSN-Pirate" stands and all the other parttakers who are still in love with the longest stage of the 5 year long story of the "Cape-Epic" are partaking in: 146Km and 1819 Hm from Swellendam to Bredasdorp. It disnt sound so bad when it comes to hightmeters, but this stage sure was goin to be a challenge.

Hey Pirates,
Last week we were in Cesenatico, Italy, Marco Pantani's hometown, where we covered some basic kilometers. The weather was so awsome we were able to ride in shorts and short sleeve clothes. We went on some great back-country tours. Our Pirate Jerzys matched perfectly to the blue sky.... :o)))

Mornin' Everyone, the fourth stage is in the box. For me it was definetly the hardest day. For me that meant that I had the oppertunity to admire this wonderful land even more.

A race at home on Cape Verde
Cycling is a hobby that can take up a lot of your time, but I'm sure you already knew that. With a job and a family, it's not always easy to cover all the bases, especially if you happen to have another hobby, like a band, which can also take up a lot of time. Thus, I alternate between training and band practice. Luckily my significant other goes along for the ride and has understanding for my obsessions J

Hola Landlubbers,
near the end of my four-week, Canary Island marathon-training-program, I found myself at the starting line of the short distance, at the Open MTB Marathon Gran Canaria, on March 8th. I dealt with the fast, gravelly creek-bed-carnage much better than the steep ascents on La Palma, last weekend. It was my "push-race." I came in 8th in the overall ranking and another win was due in my age division..... .
Ubi

March 2008

Hola Landlubbers,
after weeks of training, the La Palma Marathon was on for March 2nd. Our Spanish hosts conjured up some juicy ascents, hardcore single trails, and insane amounts of gravel for the slopes in the volcanic sand, on the short and long distance. My "visit" to the farmacia, before the race, didn't help me in that respect at all… At least it was enough for me to win the short distance in my age division (AK40).

February 2008

Now that the semester is finally over,
we booked a vacation on the slopes. Even at a height of almost 9850ft/3000m (Zugspitze), the snow-situation wasn't the best, but it was enough! Circumstances were quite different down in the valley, so after a day of skiing, we sat out on the terrace in nearly 68°F/20°C weather.

Hola landlubbers,
the first day of rest on La Palma's west side, is fittingly a rainy one. We have been vigorously pedaling on our MTBs for the past three days. Re-adapting myself from the racer to the bike wasn't exactly easy. The thick tires felt especially weird.

I've been training on my racer, here on Gran Canaria, since Sunday with Princess Ruth Hagen, 2RadChaoten.com/Volksbank Radboom. The island is super-crowded right now with members of the BDR: the women and princesses, the U-23 men, men/women juniors, the Bavarian line-up etc, etc, etc....

Off to the island…
Six months without training, produce quite an effect on the body. That's why it's about time to start getting ready for the IRONMAN Triathlon in Frankfurt. Due to the crappy weather in Germany and the lack of a good pirateship, this means jumping a flight to Lanzarote with Coach Flo (starting at the Ultraman Canada this year). 10 days of basic training camp. ;-)

1st stop of the tour: Bernina Pass
On December 28th and 29th 2007, the first race of this year's Swiss Snowkite Tour took place on the Bernina Pass. The Lago Bianco and its beautiful surroundings are an El Dorado for all snowkiters. So, the next year has begun.
First off: Happy New Year and Good Luck to all. Any resolutions?!? I have some, and in order to strengthen and freshly baptize them, so to speak, I planned a New Year's swim at the public pool on January 2nd. Since I will be probably be working til 8pm, I have planned for it to start at 8:30pm, because the pool closes at 11pm. I welcome company. This weekend, I want to go running, if anybody wants to join me. Depending on the mood, either through the Alster Valley, Saxon Forest, or along the banks of the Elbe. Maybe with a thermos for afterwards. It'll be about a 6.2m/10km run, because I'm just starting up again. Please forward this email to friends with good resolutions.
Love, Melina
