10.07.2011, Alpen-Bike-Cup in Oberammergau

This time, it was a day, youé better stayed in bed, but one thing after another.

Early in the morning at 5:45o´clock, I began my journey attended by heavy rain falls.  Already at this point I thought to myself, do I really have to do this??? Even when I got to Garmisch the weather won´t become better. But somehow Oberammergau lies directly in a weather hole, when I got their, the sun came out and the sky cleared itself and until now, everything was allright. I felt really good today. I got me my starting package and made my MTB ready for the event. But than I asked myself, did I eat enough? So, I made my way up to find a local bakery, but I didn´t find one. But while I was warming up for the race, I found one at the city limits, but I had no money with me, and I only got 15minutes to the start. Well, I thought to myself, somehow it will be work.

Shortly after the start, I remark, that I wasn´t able to push the pedals really hart, so, I started a little bit calmly, because I still got 55km and 1730m of altitude ahead of me
After 7km I was involved in a crash, somebody ahead of me made an unexpected move to the left and hit his brake and because I didn´t want to ride over him I hit my brake as well and jumped to the other side into the wide green. And why??? Because the organizer must have thought, that here in the middle of nowhere in the forest, is a perfect place for a barricade.

The mountain was still quiet easy to manage, even the last part of the ascent was really steep and you were faster by pushing up your bike than to ride up, the following downhillpart was allright,  but I asked myself, why the heck, they have to make so many pushing passages on the downhill part, it was like a steeplechase.  I think the organizer should think it over again, if this is a bike-marathon or a cross-country-race. When I run a marathon, I don´t have to climb over barricades neither, or??? That´s my opinion, but…the race went on…

At the first supply station, I got my first problems, not only with my body, as well with my technic, my tacho didn´t work anymore, he still stood at 24km, nothing worked anymore. So, I didn´t know, where I am at this point or whats next and still ahead of me, so I had to keep an eye on my fellow cambatans and I thought for the first time, to give up the race. When I reached the 35km mark, I received so eavy cramps inmy thighs, that I didn´t even know, how to stand still. I never got something like this bbefore, it was like sitting on the bike for the first time, but somehow I managed to absolve the last ascents. How??? Don´t ask me. My only goal was it, now to finish and not becoming last.

And I managed it. I ended up on the 79th place in my age-grop of 85 with a time of 4:45h. Nine starters received a DNF and 73 didn´t even started.

That’s was a experience, I still got sore muscles 4 das later in my upper thighs. Thanks again to www.sportograf.com for the pictures. Next Saturday I´ll travel for one week to the Lake Garda, I wanna ride two trips there. But now, I´m a little bit peaky with my health, last weekend I got the summer flu and I have to swallow antibiotics. So, I´ll start it all up, slow and calmly...

Having said this, see you soon…

Greetings
